Welcome to the inaugural post of Brother Brian’s Blog. In our day, there are numerous resources and assistance for those who are treated poorly by someone else. Sometimes it’s a parent, spouse, employer, or sadly, at times, a spiritual authority (pastor or other church leader). Statistics say that nearly 20 people every minute of every day are the victims of “domestic violence” – just one form of oppression. That translates into more than 10 million annually. It’s also reported that 1 in 4 women are victims. When you add to those statistics other forms of violence against others, as well as those who practice coercive control over others, the numbers are staggering. And all these are examples of oppression. God has nothing good to say about the oppressor, but shows kindness, compassion, and love to the oppressed. So let’s begin by looking at some of those Biblical passages that discuss this subject.
The word “oppress” and its various forms can be found in Scripture approximately 115 times. In addition to that, the Bible is replete with examples of people who oppressed the weak, the poor, the down-trodden, and God’s people. Isaiah 53:7 tells us that Christ himself was oppressed, so as our mediator, He understands oppression. Acts 10:38 tells us that He healed the oppressed and also indicates that ultimately, oppression comes from Satan himself. Judges 6:8-9 tell us that God reminded Israel by way of one of His prophets that God had delivered them “out of the hand of all that oppressed [them].” Samuel told Israel essentially the same thing in I Samuel 10:18. And Psalm 9:9-10 tells us “The LORD also will be a refuge [stronghold] for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.” Lastly, Psalm 103:6 states “The LORD works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed.”

God will show you compassion and can bring you deliverance from your oppressor. He can give you the strength to reach out for help.
